Outdoor Socket Safety: What Homeowners Should Know

A practical guide to outdoor electrical sockets, RCD protection, weather exposure and safe installation around the home.

← All electrical advice

Outdoor electricity has additional risks because equipment may be exposed to weather, physical damage and damp conditions. A permanent outdoor socket should be suitable for its environment and correctly connected to the electrical installation.

Safety first: This guide is general information, not a substitute for inspection or electrical testing. Do not work on live electrical equipment. If there is burning, smoke, exposed live parts, electric shock or immediate danger, keep clear and seek appropriate emergency/professional help.

RCD protection is important

RCD protection is particularly important for electrical equipment used outdoors. A registered electrician can establish what protection your existing installation provides and what is appropriate for a new outlet.

Use equipment designed for the location

Outdoor accessories need to be appropriate for the environmental conditions in which they are installed. Covers and enclosures should not be treated as a substitute for correct installation and electrical protection.

Avoid improvised extension arrangements

Running ordinary indoor extension leads through windows or doors is not a good permanent solution. Leads can be damaged, trapped or exposed to unsuitable conditions.

Get damage checked

Do not use an outdoor socket or connected equipment if you see damage, water ingress, scorching or other signs of deterioration. Isolate it if safe to do so and arrange an inspection.
