Extension Lead Safety and Overloaded Sockets

How to use extension leads more safely, why daisy-chaining is risky and when adding permanent sockets may be the better answer.

← All electrical advice

Extension leads are useful for temporary flexibility, but they can become a problem when they are treated as a permanent substitute for enough wall sockets. The total electrical load matters, not simply the number of spare holes on an extension block.

Safety first: This guide is general information, not a substitute for inspection or electrical testing. Do not work on live electrical equipment. If there is burning, smoke, exposed live parts, electric shock or immediate danger, keep clear and seek appropriate emergency/professional help.

Do not daisy-chain extension leads

Plugging one extension lead into another can increase the risk of overloading the wall socket and creates additional connections that can be damaged or loosened. Use one suitable extension lead per socket rather than chaining them.

High-power appliances need care

Heating appliances and other high-power equipment can use a large proportion of the capacity available. Follow the appliance and extension-lead instructions rather than assuming several devices can safely share one extension.

Cable reels

A cable reel may have a lower permitted load while wound because heat cannot dissipate as effectively. Follow its marked ratings and manufacturer instructions.

A permanent solution

If a room permanently depends on several extension blocks, it may be worth asking an electrician whether additional fixed sockets can be installed safely.
