Electrical Burning Smell: What Should You Do?

What to do if you notice a burning smell near a socket, switch, appliance or consumer unit and when to seek urgent electrical help.

← All electrical advice

A burning smell associated with electrical equipment should be treated seriously. Heat can be caused by a faulty appliance, damaged connection or overloaded accessory, and continuing to use it can make the situation worse.

Safety first: This guide is general information, not a substitute for inspection or electrical testing. Do not work on live electrical equipment. If there is burning, smoke, exposed live parts, electric shock or immediate danger, keep clear and seek appropriate emergency/professional help.

Stop using the affected item

If the smell is clearly associated with a portable appliance and it is safe to do so, switch it off and unplug it. Do not dismantle fixed wiring or remove covers to investigate live electrical parts.

Look for other warning signs

Scorching, discolouration, melted plastic, crackling, buzzing, smoke or an unusually hot plug or socket are all reasons to stop using the affected equipment and obtain competent advice.

If there is smoke or fire

If there is a fire, prioritise getting people to safety and contacting the emergency services. Do not put yourself at risk trying to investigate an electrical fault.

Have the cause established

Replacing a visibly damaged accessory without understanding why it overheated may leave the underlying problem unresolved. An electrician can inspect and test the circuit and connections.
