Can I Add More Sockets to a Room?

What to consider before adding extra electrical sockets, including circuit condition, loading, positioning and electrical safety.

← All electrical advice

Extra sockets can reduce reliance on extension leads and make a room more practical, but whether an existing circuit can simply be extended depends on its design and condition.

Safety first: This guide is general information, not a substitute for inspection or electrical testing. Do not work on live electrical equipment. If there is burning, smoke, exposed live parts, electric shock or immediate danger, keep clear and seek appropriate emergency/professional help.

The existing circuit matters

An electrician may need to establish the circuit type, protective device, cable arrangement and existing load before deciding the appropriate way to add outlets. A single socket cannot simply be assumed to be suitable for every proposed alteration.

Think about where sockets are needed

Plan around furniture, TVs, desks, beds and appliances rather than just adding outlets beside existing ones. Good positioning can reduce trailing leads and overloaded extension blocks.

Signs an old socket needs attention

Cracks, loose fittings, burn marks, unusual heat, buzzing or crackling should be investigated. Do not continue using an accessory that appears damaged or overheated.

Certification and regulations

Electrical installation work in England must comply with the Building Regulations. Depending on the work, notification requirements can apply; a registered electrician can advise and provide the appropriate certification for the work undertaken.
